I began working with Dr. Lanier as a high school student, and then again as an undergraduate student at the University of Florida. This quickly became one of the most valuable experiences in my undergraduate career, as I went on to adopt a leadership role, working closely with Dr. Lanier to test the viability of the human placental matrix in wound healing, and the use of magnetic coated nanoparticles for targeted drug release. I was trained in cell culture, and despite not being an engineering student by major, I was constantly encouraged me to go to medical research seminars, and to ask questions. I worked closely with Dr.Lanier on publications and posters. I gained problem solving skills that required me to analyze each step of a procedure, and design experiments to diagnose and solve issues that biased our data. In addition to lab experience, I found one of my closest friends. Our friendship transcended the walls of the lab, as we often took time after a long day of work to discuss our goals, difficulties, and celebrated each other’s accomplishments wholeheartedly. Dr. Lanier worked hard to promote diversity, and were open to dialogues regarding issues in inclusivity in the workplace. As a founding member of the Diversity Club, she held events that highlighted the contributions of minority scientists to all engineering fields. In all, I found that being a research student is an all-in holistic experience, and I was fortunate that my mentor was constantly finding ways to challenge me, and to show me how research excellence can translate into successful clinical care.

I am currently a second year medical student at the Florida State University, working towards a career in cardiology. I am also conducting research in cell based therapeutics in the BME department of FSU College of Medicine, and often draw upon the skills and advice that Dr. Lanier provided me with. I am the founder of Big Bend Buddies, a sports and nutrition program for children experiencing homelessness. I was very excited to begin this program, and Dr. Lanier was one of the first friends that I informed, because I knew how much she values giving back to the community. Olivia’s mentorship provided me with skills and knowledge that will last and propel me throughout my academic and professional career. I found in Olivia to be not only a motivating mentor, but rather a lifelong friend that I can always look up to for support and fortitude.
